The AlienBees™ ABR800 is a powerful, self-contained ringflash system designed to meet the challenges of the new-generation creative professional photographer. It is extremely compact, lightweight and easy to use with professional or semi-professional cameras having lenses up to 4 inches in diameter. A studio ringflash is an invaluable and instantly favorite tool of the professional photographer due to its ability to produce essentially shadow-free lighting, revealing unique catchlights in the eyes of subjects when used with fashion and portrait work.

The ABR800 has adjustable output from full power (320 Ws) down to 1/32nd of the total power (10 Ws). This flashpower is adjusted on the back control panel with a slide fader, capable of adjusting in whole f-stop increments and everywhere in between. When adjusted from a higher to a lower setting, the unit will automatically dump the excess power for accurate output.

Meeting the myriad needs of professional photographers, the ABR800 offers three mounting / operation options: tripod mounting, light stand mounting and hand-held use. With the tripod mounting option, both the camera and ringflash or just the ringflash can be attached to your tripod with the built-in, bottom-flush tripod mount. With the light stand mounting option, both the camera and ringflash or just the ringflash can be attached to your light stand with the built-in, swivel stand mount. Additionally, the lightweight design of the ABR800 makes hand-holding ideal - you can use the mounting post as a handle or hold the bracket in the palm of your hand.

With precision voltage regulated circuits supplying consistent output, the ABR800 boasts true “what-you-see-is-what-you-get” modeling lamp accuracy. The eight modeling lamps, positioned in a ring around the flashtubes, can be set to full brightness, turned completely off, or set to track the power changes. Furthermore, the lamps may be used to indicate recycle, dimming when the unit is recycling, and coming back on to let you know when the unit is fully recycled and you are ready to shoot again. Ready for heavy-duty, all-day shooting, the ringflash has a built-in cooling fan to keep up with the fast recycle.

The ABR800 arrives with a sync cord allowing you to connect your camera to the unit to trigger the flash. The unit additionally has a built-in slave tripper to allow wireless firing. The unit has standard 120 Vac (50-60 Hz) power requirements and arrives with our 15-foot down-angle power cord to connect to a standard, grounded outlet for power.

Both versatile and indestructible, the AlienBees™ ringflash is housed in high-impact Lexan polycarbonate (the same material used for bullet-proof glass).

Connecting the flash unit to your camera: Each AlienBees™ ringflash unit arrives with the SCABR 12-inch sync cord for hardwired connection to your camera. The cord connects to the flash unit on the unit’s back control panel (1/8-inch sync plug), then connects to your camera’s PC-sync outlet. This outlet may be labeled “PC sync,” “PC terminal,” “X-sync socket,” “external flash connector,” or “flash sync terminal” – the label varies by camera manufacturer. If your specific camera does not have a PC outlet, we offer a hot shoe adapter that fits in the standard ISO hot shoe of most cameras to enable PC-connection. Camera Compatibility:  Each ABR800 arrives with our universal camera mounting bracket, designed to accommodate most popular professional and semi-pro cameras with its wide range of adjustments. With the adjustable camera platform, you can attach your camera to the bracket and slide it in and out of the ringflash center hole to find the position that best suits your specific camera/lens combination. Side to side adjustments can be made along the platform as well to center your camera lens while the bracket itself adjusts up and down along the ringflash mounting post to accommodate large camera bodies and battery packs, supporting cameras with a 1 to 4.75-inch distance from lens center to camera base. The ringflash center chamber accommodates camera lenses measuring up to 4 inches in diameter.

Light Stands: The universal mounting bracket includes a standard Paul C. Buff™ light stand mounting block, compatible with most standard light stands having top couplers up to 5/8-inch. The ringflash may all be used on our Paul C. Buff™ LS1100, LS3050, LS3900 and TS13AC light stands.

Tripods: The universal mounting bracket also includes a 1/4-20 threaded socket for use on standard tripods.

Portable Power: For portable, battery power we recommend the use of our Vagabond Portable Power Systems.

Remote Controls: The ringflash may be used with both our LG4X™ wired remote control and our CyberSync™ system (compatible with both the CST transmitter and the Cyber Commander™). As the ringflash is a generation one Paul C. Buff™ light, it may be used with either the CSR, CSRB, CSR+ and/or CSRB+ receivers, but not the CSXCV transceiver.

Moon Units™: The ringflash is designed for use with both the MU30 30-inch Moon Unit and MU56 56-inch Moon Unit, with all associated Moon Unit accessories, in all possible configurations (both aim-through and off-camera).

PLM™ and Umbrellas: The ringflash arrives with an off-camera umbrella adaptor fitting standard umbrella poles up to 3/8-inch in diameter. When using an umbrella (with the umbrella adaptor), the ringflash may not be used in aim-through mode as the adaptor fills the center hole space. Note: the 86” PLM™ umbrellas are NOT recommended for use with the ABR800.

Reflectors: The only reflector that is compatible with the ringflash is the 10-inch ring reflector supplied with the unit. The ABRHG20 20º grid fits inside this reflector. No other Paul C. Buff™ reflectors or grids may be used with the ringflash.

Gels and Filters: The ABRW/DF6 set of six warming and diffusion filters are designed for use with the ringflash, held in place by the raised center retaining lip positioned along the inside ring of the diffuser. Our standard gels and filters (CF6, CF20, WF6, UV6, DF6 and ND6) will not cover the face of the unit.

Travel Gear: One AlienBees™ Ringflash unit can be carried in our ABRBAG AlienBees™ Ringflash carrying bag (with the diffuser, reflector, cords, mounting block and room for other small accessories). The ringflash may also be carried along with various Moon Unit™ setups in the MUBAG Moon Unit™ Carrying Bag.

Replacing AlienBees™ Ringflash Components: For future replacement needs, each ringflash unit arrives with two half-circle ABRFT10MM flashtubes. These are user-replaceable tubes that may be purchased and replaced individually or as a pair, arriving with instructions for replacement. The unit also arrives with a set of eight 10W modeling lamps, also user-replaceable and sold as a replacement set. Other flashtubes and modeling lamps may not be substituted.
